My Favorite Verse: The Armor of God

Everyone has a favorite Bible verse. It’s the special verse they turn to when they’re having a particularly trying day. Mine is actually a string of verses.

Ephesians 6:10-17

The depiction of what we all know as The Armor of God.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against th.png

You might be wondering why I chose these verses, considering they’re all about, well fighting. But that’s exactly why I love them so much.

Yes. These verses clearly point out that we are in a battle. A battle with the devil that takes place every second of the day. Which is a pretty frightening concept.

But, they also tell us that we are not fighting with our own power.

OUR WINGMAN

Ephesians warns us that the road ahead is not an easy one to walk, but it also promised that we are not going to be walking it alone.

It tells us that God not only knows our struggles, He has also prepared us for the battle by giving us armor that can work against our non-physical enemies. He promises that if we put on this armor we can stand against each one of the devil’s schemes.

He promises us that He will be by our side through the darkness.

OUR TOOLS

So, what tools can we find in our heavenly arsenal?

We have the belt of truth. With this tool we can refute any lie the devil sends out way. We get it by reading God’s word, the source of all truth.

We also have the breastplate of righteousness. The Word tells us that we find our righteousness in our faith that Christ died for our sins. Because of its source we know that this particular piece of armor can never be lost or stolen.

Our feet are covered by the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. As Christians we were given the Great Commission, a charge to storm enemy territory with God’s soul saving message of peace and love. With it no POW will be left behind.

In our hand we have the shield of faith. A tool that not only helps us stand against the devils flaming arrows, but can actually extinguish them. Even faith as small as the humble mustard seed is enough to get us through.

On our heads we’ll find the helmet of salvation, knowing that no matter what we are safely held in God’s hands. One day this piece of armor will be replaced by a crown. It too can never be lost or stolen.

And finally we find our offensive piece of armor, the sword of the Spirit. We are told in verse seventeen that this sword is literally the word of God, which we see in other verses, is the Bible. The word of God is literal Truth, the best defense against the devils lies.

If all of that weren’t enough, God also promises that prayer itself is an active tool to use against the devil on our mission in verse 18. Since God is always with us, this is a weapon we can use to defeat the enemy at any time.

CONSLUSION

You see, the devil may be “prowling like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” *(1 Peter 5:8), but we are not simply defenseless victims.

We are called to be aware of the schemes of the evil one and his minions (Matthew 10:16), to prepare for the battles ahead (Ephesians 6:10, 2 Timothy 4:2 1 Peter 3:15), and to take our stand against the powers of darkness with the Lord at our side (Ephesians 6:11, 13, 18).

As long as we walk in God’s power, we’ll never be defeated.
